Designed by architect Manuel Tolsa, construction began in 1805 under a neoclassical style and has 23 courtyards, 106 rooms, 78 halls and two chapels. Built to house orphans, elderly and homeless in 1983 he became Cultural Institute. They admire the murals of José Clemente Orozco where prehispanic life clash between indigenous and Spanish and passages in the history of Guadalajara is reflected.
